The book first came out in 1904 and was reprinted many times. This is a 1911 printing. In the Preface, Batchelder credits Denman Ross with the ideas presented in this work. The book is a good introduction to Pure Design theory. Batchelder would go on to break new ground with his text Design in Theory and Practice. Today Batchelder is mainly known for his tiles.
