Description

Dow, Arthur W. (Arthur Wesley), 1857-1922.

Composition; a series of exercises in art structure for the use of students and teachers.
Garden City, N.Y., Doubleday, Doran & Company 1920. Ninth edition, revised and enlarged with new illustrations and color plates.

Composition first came out in 1899. It went through a number of printings and then was out-of-print from about 1907 until the revised edition came out in 1913. The new edition was well received and went through many printing. While the book is written as a stand-alone, Dow’s 1908 book The Theory and Practice of Teaching Art makes it clear that Composition was a part of the larger theory of design that was emerging at the time.
